Thursday 27/08/2020 - Bathampton AA - Over 55's and Short Walks

After Tuesday match where the gale force winds ripped skin to today when the torrential rain turned skin wrinkly. We were told by the BBC to expected rain around 3 to 4 pm. Well in started at 10 am and finished at 4 pm. Predictions don't get any worse.

Had my usual walk around the fishery and spotted some remnants of the Tuesday's storm - a tree in the Main Lake - pictured. Bridge Pool looked very coloured again due to the effects of the winds. It looked as if it would be another difficult day's fishing. I didn't mind where I drew so long as it wasn't between pegs 30 and 6 which is about 30 % of the pegs, so 70 % would be acceptable - reasonable odds you'd think.

Dave Gillard shouted Tony Rixon peg 14 and I was hoping to hear him call me peg 15 a switch round form last match. However, I was called peg 31. Umm.

For company I had Pete Greenslade and once Pete Turner found out he wasn't on peg 13 arrived on peg 30. I think Pete's hair is muffling his ears. I was undecided on whether to target Silvers or Carp. On these pegs you have to get you head down on the Silvers all match to stand a chance of a pick up. However, I thought the best chance of a pick up would be to catch three to four decent Carp. There are just about enough obliging Carp this end. So I set up two paste rigs one top set plus one barrel and a top set to fish down wind (yes once again the small amount of wind was blowing in at me). I started long and as usually happens this end I had four quick Skimmers before it died. Tried the margin but I felt it was going to be a struggle. So I set up a Ronnie rig and fished caster and had a three small Tench, Perch and Ronnie's. I did lose a decent foul hooked Skimmer. Looking around our end of the Pool no one was catching. At his stage I should have set up a Skimmer rig and fished caster and GB but with the rain now torrential I stayed under the brolly and went back on the paste and at 3 pm I had an F1 lost 2 foul hooked big Carp landing one. All this in 15 minutes before it completely died. There was cheer our end when Dave called all out.

My Silvers weighed 8 lb 12 oz and my Carp 8 lb for a total of 16 lb 12 oz. The highest weight from our end pegs pegs 29 to 6 as predicted. On hindsight I should have changed to Silvers as I was only  2 lb out of a pick up.

Someone suggested that section payouts should be considered to make the bottom end more competitive.

The match was won by Paul Barnfield (pictured with the Silvers winner) with 76 lb 10 oz from peg 18. Paul caught long on worm over micro.

The Silvers was won by Tony "Bramble" Rixon with 27 lb 14 oz from peg 14. See his bog for the details - but would have included a shed load of casters.

Back to the pub with the usual suspects - best part of the day.

Result:

1. Paul Barnfield 76-10-0 peg 18

2. Ray Bazeley 46-09-0 peg 19

3. Mark Tanner 43-07-0 peg 7

4. Tony Rixon 42-06-0 peg 14

Silvers:

1. Tony Rixon 27-14-0 peg 14

2. Kevin Winstone 22-07-0 peg 27

3. Mark Tanner 15-02-0 peg 7

4. Hughie Evans 12-03-0 peg 21

Tuesday 25/08/2020 - Acorn Cost Cutter - Paddocks

After a lovely week in Cornwall (St. Issey) with my Son, Wife and Grand kids I was looking forward to fishing a match. However, the weather forecast was putting a downer on it - gale force winds and rain. I decided to go against the advice of the Special One. Arrived in plenty of time for a walk around and found pegs 6 round to peg 25 reasonably sheltered from the wind. Pegs 13 to 9 was a different story the wind was hammering into these pegs and consoled myself that Mike would leave these out. Peg 27 would be today's choice. I decided to fish if the numbers were above ten and was surprised that fourteen other loonies arrived. So pay the pools and was allocated peg 11!!! I was feeling a bit miffed with drawing this peg on such a day as there are a few Tench in the peg but would not be able sensibly present.

Thought about going home. Drove to the peg and stood on the platform and it wasn't unlike getting into a cold sea. There was only one place I could fish sensibly which was short down wind gale (hammering in at 1 o-clock). Thought I would just test the presentation before deciding if I would fish. I got out my a short top set put with a Drennan 25 elastic fitted. This was necessary because the tree which I was fishing towards was adorned with Two Pots floats from his previous two visits to the peg. I felt it necessarily to fish a heavier than normal float so a 0.4 gram paste float was selected attached to 0.2 GLine. The presentation was just about acceptable so decided to fish but only getting kit and bait out of the car that was absolutely necessary, consisting a half a pint on 4 's and some Micro which I put in the GB bowl to prevent it getting blown in, and of course a pot of paste.

The wind was a right pain hooking up many times in the bank side vegetation. However, I was soon playing some decent Carp. There was a number of time I nearly lost my landing net, but had a steady match catching Carp to 10 lb. It was a very uncomfortable at times in the wind and odd sharp shower, but it was never cold. At about half way some smaller Carp moved in which were a pain as they were quicker than me and as I was fishing close to the platform broke me diving under it - little buggers. I soon got the better Carp back. I put fifth net in and was thinking it strange that I hadn't caught any Silvers. I added a 10 lb Carp in this net when I had a 2 lb Skimmer and three Tench which I put back!!

The Paul Faiers affair: I was suddenly aware of a small figure running towards me down the far bank island carrying a landing net with a handle four times longer than he was tall. He stopped at my end bank and shouted what sounded like "Suck the Duck" I recognised the dulcet tones. He spun on his heels and ran back over the bridge and ran down the bank to my right and started to climb into the tree (pictured - really need the sound affects to appreciate how windy it was) where a Duck was caught up in some line and elastic. After a few minutes a happy Paul Faiers appeared from the tree carrying a top set which the Duck had stolen form him. No one was injured during this whole affair. Chris Ollis had a laugh when the Duck climbed over the bridge towing the top set.

I added a few more Carp before the all out which I was thankful to hear.

No Silvers to weigh but put back about 10 lb weighing 217 lb of Carp for first overall in a match that fished extremely well.

The Silvers was won once again from bridge peg 40 by Mark Walsh (pictured withe the match winner) with a PB weight of  65 lb 12 oz of Tench. Mark caught up to mid span of the bridge using paste over micro. Well done matey.

I think apart from the awful weather everyone had a good days fishing.

Back to the pub with the usual suspects. With some having wind burnt faces.

Thursday 13/08/2020 - Bathampton AA - Over 55's and Short Walks

First to arrived, so walked the whole complex and couldn't help noticing a vast difference from last match with fish feeding everywhere. Got to Bridge Pool where the Carp were having a right munch, which also meant their Skimmer Groupies would be feeding near by. The most Carp activity was between pegs 11 and 27 so any of them would do today and I had decided to fish for Carp - unless. Met with Kev Winston and told him a ton was on the cards today.

Dave Gillard drew me peg 15. I had to think for a second where I was going as Iv'e not been on these pegs for a long time. Happy with this and even though it has some Silvers form decided to target the Carp short, which would benefit the pole fencing with peg 16. Great company again with Tony Rixon on peg 15 - he would target the Silvers for sure and at 90 degrees was Chris "Squeaky Roller" Ollis, who also had the Silvers in his sights.

Set up the waggler for fishing to the island at 17 metres with maggot over maggot, two paste floats, both on the top-set one out in front in 6 foot of water, just up the shelf and the other for both margins at the same depth for paste over potted micro and loose fed 4's.

Started by feeding the RH margin and out in front with a pot of wetted micro and pulted a few LR's over on the waggler line. Started out in front with the paste expecting a quick Carp, but not only nibblers. So picked up the waggler and with single LR on the hook had a couple of Rudd then the micro Perch showed up and wasn't upset when for some unknown reason the sliding float link managed to come off the line - a bit line the ring and rope magic trick - must discuss this with Dave Willmott. So set it up again which proved unnecessary as I decided to try the RH margin and didn't get another cast. First try in the margin and a decent Carp in the net. By potting a few micros and loose feeding 4 to 6 hard 4's over the top (which amused Tony) I had a great run of quality Carp. In between I was catch their groupies - some decent accidental Skimmers to Chris's dismay. I waited until the last Carp o'clock hour before switching to the LH hand side and had another decent run of more quality Carp - very pretty fish.

My accidentals weighed 17 lb 8 oz and my Carp 118 lb 07 oz for a match winning total of 135 lb 15 oz - a marginal victory. Great days fishing for a number of reasons - one notable was getting cooled off by the rain.

The Silvers was won by Tony Rixon (pictured above with the match winner) with an excellent weight of 42 lb 1 oz from peg 15. See his blog for the details but what he won't mention was how well he fished both short and shallow with caster but especially when he started at 17 metres for the F1's - class act not many anglers can do this and no one does it better, catch brambles and still get the F1's out! No Bramble gate today.

Back to the pub with the usual suspects to end a day when the Pool fished very well.

Result:

1. Mike Nicholls 135-15-0 peg 15

Tuesday 11/08/2020 - Acorn Cost Cutter - Paddocks

A quick circuit of the fishery to find the aeration system full blast, particularly on peg 27, hope they turn it off before the angler sets up - pictured. Be a good draw today.

Mike drew me peg 6 not unhappy with this but you do feel hemmed in a bit - pictured. Empty peg 7 would have been better as I would have had an empty peg each side. For company I had Incognito on peg 40 - that's the Silvers winner gone then. I could see plenty of Carp about, but whether they would feed is another story.

I set up a worm rig for any Tench straying from peg 40 and a margin paste float - simple. I started by feeding a pot of neat casters at top-set plus three which took me halfway to the bridge and a pot of micro down each margin at top-set. Started after the Tench and after a couple of tiny Carp and Tench I was pestered by Perch and I was getting memorised by the ripping shadow of the bridge, so after an hour gave it up to concentrate on the Carp. A  light breeze was coming towards me from the SE so fished the paste rig to the left and that's when the frustration started.

I was loose feeding a few 4's over the top of the micro and found that it would attract a number of Carp, one or two and if I was really lucky three would end up in the keep net I would then foul hook all subsequent Carp. If I didn't feed I wouldn't get any indications except from the nibblers. It was amazing to watch the Carp stand off the feed area with tails up, head
s down waiting to come in as soon as I fed which would result in some Carp in the keep net and an equal amount foul hooked. The breeze came round 180 degrees, now coming from the SW, so switched to the RH margin and found the same behavior of the Carp. I tried feeding inside and outside the line, reducing the feed and increasing. Whatever, if I didn't feed I caught nothing. The Carp were still standing off waiting for the feed, just like boats waiting to come into harbour. I determined that it was something I had to contend with - crafty buggers. I finished with 26 Carp. I didn't get one foul hooker out but did lose two hooked fairly.

My few Silvers and Carp combined weighed 145 lb 7 oz for third overall. I did go over in one net by 3 lb 15 oz this came about by miss counting one net by one Carp I did realise later it came about after a lean spell. Nonetheless, other than the really hot weather is was another good day out watching the Carp behaviour. Thanks to Bev for bringing us all a cold drink - much appreciated.

The match was won by Glenn Bailey (pictured right) with 169 lb 3 oz from peg 11. Glenn caught on the paste both down the track and both margins. He did have a practice on the method but was retrieving with all the bait still in it!!

The Silvers as predicted was won by Eddy Wynne (pictured right) with 52 lb 14 oz from peg 40. Eddy caught on hard 6 mm pellet over kindered hard 4's up to the bridge mid point.

Spotted Des Shipp (pictured lower middle) who had come down to give Zoe a whipping whip lessons for the up and coming small Carp match planned for next Tuesday on the Specimen Lake. Unfortunately I
can't make it and sounds like a good day out with BBQ etc... Call Mike Chapman to book in, but not sure if it's sold out

Result:

1. Glenn Bailey 191-03-0 peg 11

2. Keith Ray 179-09-0 peg 15

3. Mike Nicholls 145-07-0 peg 6

Silvers:

1. Eddy Wynne 52-14-0 peg 40

Sunday 09/08/2020 - Tony Rixon's Short Pole - Todber Manor - Ash and Homeground

Steady drive down and on arrival bought a black tea from the no so mobile van (pictured right - giving the look of French cuisine). Looks a nice set-up and was popular with the lads, albeit a tad expensive. Joe McMahon aka Yorkie had a problem eating with his hands, dribbling his food - must eat driving his HGV with a knife and fork - pictured.

Tony split the match into two with top four overall  and one Silver on each Lake.

I had a walk around and really fancied a peg on Ash with the wind in the North North West it was perfect for giving some cover to all pegs. I didn't fancy peg 90 on Homeground as not keen to have a Carp fest. As it happened Tony had put Steve Tucker down twice so it wasn't drawn - whats the chances of that!! In I went and picked a peg from the bottom of the tub and had a familiar peg in my hands - 85 Homeground. I have been on this peg a few times now and because the wind would be off my back wasn't that enthused and during my walk had decided that if I drew this side I would fish for Silvers and the other side Carp.

Arriving at the peg I was definitely on the Dark side of the Lake one side young Dark Ginge the other Daddy Dark ex-Ginge. Whilst setting up I found a Sythe in the margin weeds which at my age was worrying (pictured). It was placed well away from my peg. Needless to say I drove home very steadily.

Set up - Long Ronnie rig caster over caster and two paste floats, one for over the Ronnie rig in case I had to fish out nuisance Carp and the other a Bullet to fish in the RH margin - in case. I started on the Ronnie rig with single caster and started catching small Hybrids which were about 4 oz and just too active to swing, in between I caught some Skimmers to 12 oz with plenty of 1 oz Ronnie's. After about 2 1/2 hours I went to the car for a paracetamol and spoke to Clayton who was struggling for Carp with no one catching Silvers I went back and decided to knock up some GB which was laced with caster and caught two quick decent Skimmers and thought I had sorted something - but no I was then pestered by 1 oz Ronnie's, I couldn't get through them. So decided to put the remaining GB down the edge and fished the paste over the caster line and caught 15 Carp in 15 put-ins (interesting that I didn't catch any on the caster). I had been loose feeding 4's over the top which I think brought the Carp up as I stated to foul hooking. I had enough and wasn't going to catch up those opposite on the Carp. So went back to caster over caster and kept a few small fish coming - just enough to keep me occupied. Twenty minutes to go Carp moved in to the margin so dropped the paste in and caught five move before the all out, the Carp certainly know when to feed in the margin so spending the minimum amount of time in a keep net.

My Silver weighed 23 lb 12 oz for the Silvers Lake win and my Carp 70 lb 15 oz for 94 lb 11 oz not quite the ton..

My Lake and the match was won by Clayton Hudson (pictured right) with 260 lb 15 oz from corner Homeground peg 81. Clayton caught all his fish down to his end bank using Tom Thick margin mix with DR's on the hook in 17.547 inches (he is an engineer) of water also feeding three pints of DR's. Clayton caught most of his fish during the second half. Well done matey.

The Silvers overall was won by Ryan Shipp with 35 lb 11 oz from Ash peg 70. Ryan would have caught at full length fishing shallow on caster over loose caster.

Result:

Homeground:

1. Clayton Hudson 260-15-0 peg 81 (Match Winner)

2. Gary Bowden 210-10-0 peg 76

Thursday 06/08/2020 - Shiplate Cost Cutter - Main Lake

Couldn't help noticing the for sale sign outside the fishery this morning which has just gone on the market. Steve and Carol off on a well deserved retirement - All details:

https://www.fineandcountry.com/uk/property-for-sale/westonsupermare-bleadon/bs24-0ny/1781312

I thought it good value, Lets hope it stays as a fishery for all.

The Chuckle Twins were here today - Spike and  Goggles - pictured right.

After a double shuffle of the swim cards and placed on the bench in orderly lines I went for the first one down hoping it would be peg 1!! It wasn't as peg 13 was looking back at me - unlucky for some. Got to the peg and found Paul Faiers on next peg 13A, so good company.

I was hoping to fish this peg the same as peg 14, however, after plumbing around could only find 30 inches of water out to five metres where it gradually sloped into slightly deeper water - no shelf close in - a bit disappointing. The peg got a couple of inches deeper to the left so move the seat box to the peg extremities to the left. Decided to stay in the shallow water at top set plus two barrels. However, the LH margin was to die for two foot deep right up to boards hidden in the bank side vegetation. But knew Carp wont come in here until the last knockings. So two paste floats - a Bullet for the margin and a 0.3 gram for out at 10 o'clock trying to get as much depth as possible whilst fishing short. Fed both lines with pot of micro starting on the long line and first put in had a 7 lb angry Carp. Subsequently pleasantly surprised to start catching Skimmers. However, it didn't last long and the nibblers arrived. I tried a worm over the top which just got ragged by the nibblers which were small Ronnie's. Had a quick look in the margin with paste and found more nibblers, Decision made to set up the short Ronnie rig and started in the margin with caster over loose fed caster and caught Ronnie's regularly, but found a tree a nuisance so switch to out in front and had a good few hours - my typed of fishing - very busy. As expected just after the last hour started I hooked a Carp which broke me killing the out in front fishing, so went into the margin and kept a few more Ronnie's coming as I knew by now that the only way to coin was the Silvers. That was until I saw a Carps tail waving at me from the margin - come and get me. So in with the paste on the margin top set and caught eight more Carp - some right beast.

My Silvers weighed 26 lb made up of 8 lb of Skimmers and circa 100 Ronnie's for 18 lb this got me a third in the Silvers default - so mission partly completed. My 9 Carp weighed 77 lb 15 oz for a fifth overall total of 103 lb 15 oz.

Two Pots was opposite and all I seen him do all day was pot bait, so was surprised he had time to catch 118 lb 4 oz for also a default pick up. Pictured right weighing in.

The match was won be Tich (pictured upper right with the Silvers winner) with 224 lb 12 oz from flyer peg 1. Tich caught a few slapping and long pole, but caught most of his Carp on the method down to the end bank. All on pellet.

The Silvers was won by Tony Rixon with 37 lb 8 oz from peg 4. See his blog for details of how he caught them on 6 mm hard pellet short.

Our first stop in a pub since lock down, the beer didn't touch the sides. Nice ebd to another great day out.

Result:

1. Tich 224-12-0 peg 1

2. Gary Flinders 35-12-0 peg 14B

3. Dave Wride 32-14-0 peg 14

Tuesday 04/08/2020 - Acorn Cost Cutter - Paddocks

Back to Acorn and a quick walk round, again there seems to be a lot of fish at the top end. However, the wind had been blowing into pegs 12, 11 and 10 so any of those would do me.

28 booked in and one no show who would have been on peg 10!! Of course this made the pegs in this area even better. Mike called me bridge peg 40 and no emotion and for company I had Keith Ray who wasn't happy with his peg 39 - didn't blame him, that said I think it put his head in the wrong place showing up by going over in both his nets with one disqualified. Lesson learn I think. Still great company.

As is common knowledge the the big Tench are hiding under the bridges. Previous after match interviews told me the Tench have been caught on paste over micro and hard banded 6's over potted hard 4's. So I set up two paste rigs - one for the middle stanchion and the other down the LH side where the margin was perfect for the way I fish the paste. I also pumped up some 6 mm expander to use on the only other rig a 4x13 MR again for the middle stanchion. I fed the margin with the usual pot of micro and some out to the stanchion with with some hard 4's added. It didn't take long before the fizzing started. Went over it with the expander and immediately started to foul hook Carp. There were certainty plenty showing. Frustrated with that tried the paste and similar happened. Umm. I messed about with this by only feeding hard 4's - this didn't help matters adding one foul hooked Carp to the net. A rethink and got out half a pint of casters I had left over from Sunday and fed some over to the stanchion and went in the margin with paste feeding hard four over the top and had a good run of decent Carp to 10 lb. I reckon I had 40 lb of Carp when I tried the 4x13 with double caster over to stanchion. It was noticeable that there was no fizzing over the caster, nonetheless no bites. So as I shot my paste floats I was able to try a worm over the caster and had an immediate response from the Tench I caught steady for an hour putting Tench to 4 lb in the net. In between feeding caster I tried the margin catching Carp in pairs but they were getting smaller. So by switching between the two lines I kept both Tench and Carp coming. With an hour to go I had used up the caster so resulted in feeding maggot on the Stanchion which worked, but no as well. I thought I had about 50 lb of Tench which would usually be enough to win the Silvers, so spent the last half hour after Carp in the margin with paste in the hope of doing a double bubble. I was expecting a good spell but could only catch Carp to 3 lb.

My Tench weighed in at 49 lb 6 oz and my Carp 84 lb 12 oz for a total of 134 lb 2 oz. I was one Tench out from winning the Silvers, but seconds good. Also I was a couple of decent Carp from winning overall coming third which is also satisfying. So both pools covered, mission accomplished.

The match was won by Bob Smith (pictured right with the Silvers winner - pleased with this pictured.) with 146 lb 11 oz from peg 12. Bob caught long on pellet over to the island for about 40 lb and later down his RH margin with either corn or pellet adding another 100 lb. Well done mate.

The Silvers was won by match organiser Mike "The Tench" Chapman with 51 lb 13 oz from peg 5. Mike caught at top set plus two using double caster hook bait over potted caster. Mike had 20 Tench and some decent Skimmers in his catch. Again well dome matey.

Sunday 02/08/2020 - Tony Rixon's Float Only - Landsend - Specimen, Match and John Walter's Lakes

My route to Landsend fishery was via Ring Road, Brislington, Hartcliffe and A38 and was stopped at 9 sets of traffic lights. Going home decided to go my old route via Wells, A37 and Keynsham and what difference more or less kept on the move all the way, plus a more relaxing drive.

On a arrival I had a walk around the fishery, John Walter's Lake would have been my choice especially the far end. I admit I'm one of the few that like this Lake. Spotted this sign on the fishery so left the pain killers in the car. On close inspection it appeared to be made of dartboard materials.

A number of comments about Tony Rixon's (pictured right) weight loss (I didn't notice anything - mist be gradual). Apparently it's an eat as much as you like diet plus working non-stop at Premier Angling.

Given the choice for either Tony or draw your own peg. Too risky to leave to fate so chose my own which was peg 22 on match Lake. Slightly disappointed as the Lake fished poorly the day before, but do like the pegs on this bank even though the fish seem to be at the other end at the moment. Next peg was pole repairer Clayton Hudson, not much company with his bloody earphones in all day.

Although my game plan was margin paste fishing I thought I would give the Silvers an early chance because Tony was paying the top Silvers on each Lake, so set up two rigs - the Ronnie rig for caster over caster and a 4x12 to fish top-set plus three barrels with 4 mm expander over micro. Started on the expander kindering 10 to 12 micro's every fish and had two 8 oz Skimmers before the Ronnie's arrived, they love the pellet on this venue preferring them to caster. A few more small Ronnie's then I had a 3 lb Carp followed by a foul hooked Carp which I pinged out of to fine the float eye was missing so a new rig fitted, which proved a waste of time as all I could then catch was small Ronnie's and this method isn't the way to build a weight of them. So onto the caster over loose fed same and all I could catch was small Perch and once they petered out all thoughts of Silver abandoned for the margin paste. So paste over micro and loose fed hard 4's in would be. I did enjoy this part of the match catching on and off - catch two then wait for them to return - sneaky fish at this venue. I knew there wasn't enough Carp in this part of the Lake (as nearby peg results show) for a Lake win and also I wasn't foul hooking many which can be a problem. So a steady day catching 15 decent Carp.

My few Silvers weighed 4 lb 11 oz and my Carp 71 lb 4 oz for a total of 75 lb 15 oz for 10th overall and one out of a section pickup. Happy as I felt I got all I could from the peg. As expected the better weights came form the other end of this bank. Still enjoyed it, learning more about paste fishing every match.

The match was won by Paul Elmes (pictured right with the Silvers winner) with 142 lb 12 oz from fancied end peg 11. Paul caught on 6 mm banded over hard 6 mm feed from two places - up to the end bank and over to the end of the opposite island.

The Silvers was won by Glenn Calvert with 16 lb 6 oz with mainly small fish. Glenn caught small Skimmers and Roach long on expander and small Perch and more Roach short on maggot.
