This league was previously known as the Veal’s Teams of Four – now called South West Teams of Four and now being run by Tony Rixon (Rip Off). So Charlie Barns mustered his old Angels – Tom Thick, Rich Coles and me. The first match was at Chiltern Trinity – Woodlands and Wild Marsh. I didn’t relay mind which lake I fished as I had the bait for both. Charlie and I drew Woodlands – Charlie, peg 24 and me peg 7. I have drawn this peg before this year and had 89lb for second to peg 16. So I was happy with the draw. However, there was a match on Woodlands the day before ran by Leyton Palmer, I know because he asked me if I wanted to fish. On arriving at my peg I immediately knew my peg had been fished the day before and by someone that fishes Bowd Valley Lake. How did I know this, simply because of the unmistakable red mud that was left on the platform – I wonder who it was? I was a bit disappointed to find that peg 6 was in, last time it wasn’t. In fact there were too many of us crammed in the end corner with pegs 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 being fished. Thus seriously affected the fishing with Anton Page on peg 3 only weighing in 5oz!
I set up two paste rigs one for 5 metes and the other for both margins and a 4x16 Jolly to fish with either expander pellet and paste (plus any other bait I might use). I started by feeding 125ml of 50/50 hard 4’s and wetted micros at 5 metres and commencing to feed both margins. First put in at 5 metres with paste I had a 3lb Carp with four more of similar size following in the next 30 minutes. Looking around I reckon I was well in the lead, but not for very long as the swim died. I think I was being a bit impatient deciding to re-feed, I feel now I should have given it a bit longer before doing so. It was far too early to go in to the margin so tried the 6mm expander pellet at 5 metres and had one bite and a few indications for nothing – not even a Silver fish which was highly unusual. So early in to the margin it was to be then. Because the wind was fairly strong, blowing left to right I favoured the down wind RH side and first put in had a small Carp. Paul Elmes on peg 6 was struggling and also went in to the same margin swim - his LH side. I knew this wasn’t going to help my case so I tried the LH margin but the wind was a bit too strong for the soft paste so got out the stiffer paste. I had another small Carp but our end of the lake was fishing very poor. I kept trying the three swims to the end of the match and ended up with a total of 10 Carp for a weight of 35lb 8oz - with unusually dry Silvers net – unbelievable. This gave me 6 points, with 38lb 5oz taking nine points - so close. This helped the Charlie’s angels to 6th overall with 21 points.
The match was won by Leon Hubbard (pictured right) with 82lb 11oz from peg 26 on Woodlands (W). Leon started fishing the pole at 13 metres shallow then dropped short to 5 metres on the bottom with either paste and pellet, where he caught the lion’s share of his weight.
The Silvers was won by Gary Etheridge (pictured above right) from peg 61 on Wild Marsh (WM) with 19lb 15oz. Gary caught all sorts on maggot - deep and shallow.
Close runner up was Nicky Collins (pictured right with his net of Silvers) from peg 16 on Woodlands with 19lb 8oz. All Nicks fish fell to chopped worm and caster.

It was great to see Mike Chapman attending his first match, by the looks of him he must have qualified many years ago! The last time I saw Mike was thrashing away on Barrows number two. With Steve Jefferies showing his face for the first time this year added to a good turn out of 28 anglers. However, it was nearly a redraw because someone took two pegs – time for recorded draw perhaps? Anyway Colin sorted it in his usual fashion sending anglers to peg 1 and 34!
It looks like that the BAA Thursday Silvers Winter League is going to be a sell out – glad I got my name down – contact Mike Jones if you want one of the few remaining places.
What a beautiful start to the day, with the crisp smell of autumn in the air and an ASDA “Full Monty” inside me. I drew peg 33 today which is two up from the far end bank. I wasn’t too displeased with this. However, I was undecided whether to fish for Carp, Ronnie’s, Skimmers, or a bit of all, so kept my options open. It would be the Ronnie’s rig and caster to start, followed up with a Skimmer line at 7 metres, and then if all failed a paste rig in the margin. I felt that the fishing might be harder this end of the Lake so I thought I would knock up some Gimps Gold with some wetted micro to be fed on the 7 metre Skimmer line. However, I started on the caster and had a couple of Ronnie’s and a couple of small Perch – the writing was on the wall – no Ronnie’s again today – umm. So out on the Skimmer line it was to be, whilst feeding 4mm hard pellet in to the LH margin. I had a run of tiny Skimmers to 3oz, this was OK as no one I could see had caught a fish! After two hours when I had about 5lb of Silvers I foul hooked a Carp – one of five on this line – the fish were not feeding, which I put down to the changing of seasons and the bright sun light. I didn’t know whether to re-feed or not. I can confirm that once you have put bait in you can’t take it out – unfortunately! The swim all but died, not a disaster as Harry Muir and Steve Jefferies each side of me hadn’t had a bite!! At half time and to plan into the margin to give paste a try. In four hours fishing it I had three decent Carp. The swim had completely died after this, so decide for the remaining half hour to fish for Skimmers and added about 2lb. My Skimmers weighed 7lb 8oz and my three Carp went 35lb 7oz making a not so grand total of 42lb 15oz. This put me 5th in the Silvers and 6th overall. I have stopped recording pickups on this blog; however, this was an exception as I picked up £19!!!
The anglers both sides of me DNW’d which for Steve Jefferies on peg 34 was probably foreseen as he arrived without his nets. Martin Alexander came to the rescue loaning Steve both landing and keep nets on the condition that if Martin had more than 80 lb he would want it back – that would have been interesting.
The match was won by Terry Bruton (pictured right with the Silvers winner) on peg 30 with 94lb 10oz consisting of nine Carp. Terry caught on the pellet waggler with 10mm pellet feeding the same over the top, Terry also caught at 12 metres with 8 mm expander on the hook, fished over potted hard 8’s.
The Silvers was won by Rich Coles with 24lb 12oz from peg 8. Rich caught a mixed bag consisting of mostly Skimmers fishing worm over CW&C – Rich by name rich was nature!!

It was very sad news to hear that Gary Wall (pictured right) had passed away; I think we were all willing him to carry on for ever. I like many other anglers didn’t know Gary personally, simply because he was a very private person. One thing I had in common with him was photography, Gary specialised in wild life. I wish I could have seen some of his work as I understand it was of the highest standard. Tony in his blog mentioned about some of Gary’s more excitable moments. One such event that I will always remember occurred during a match at Avalon. I had drawn peg 25, and whilst setting up I could here some cussing followed by what seemed carbon sawing, so being a nosy bugger I investigated and found Gary on opposite peg 21 with a hacksaw setting about one of his major sections. Gary explained that he had broken a section close to the joint hence it would not pull through so he needed to cut the joint off. Who on earth carry’s a hacksaw to a match – Gary Wall does. Just a few weeks later on arriving for a Sunday Viaduct match I was told that Gary had won the Saturday match with 245lb off Lodge peg 70 - incredible. I must say Gary that you had a brilliant final season fishing the paste – RIP Paste Master.
On Charlie Barns recommendation I decided to fish the feeder from beginning to end, more so to stop his nagging. I also decided that because I believed the venue to be more natural than the commercial venues I fish these days to use a traditional GB. So last night I mixed up a bag of Sensas Bream 3000 to be fished with sweet corn. My first mistake I think. I was asked to peg it out and because I have yet to draw out of the Lakes leg I decided to peg it backwards. Peg 1 near the Dam end. I still haven’t drawn out of the leg! I pulled peg 8, my second mistake. To the plan I started on the feeder with corn and after two hours had one Skimmer to show for it. I could tell from the discussions along the bank that the fishing was slow around me. However, I decided to have a walk and as expected the lower pegs on the main bowl of the lake were catching Skimmers and Bream – but on the pole. Arriving at Charlie’s peg 2 (one from the end) he confessed to having just a few Skimmers and said he should have fished the pole because Rod Wotton, Tom Thick and Steve Dawson were catching on the pole with traditional soft pellet or corn over 4mm pellet – plunker – Ex venue expert!! So back to my peg and I set up a pellet rig but it was all too late and at the wrong end of the match. In the last four hours I could only muster a few Ronnie’s and Perch for a grand total of 6lb 6oz. However, I wasn’t last – quite.
The match was won by Mark Tanner (pictured right with his three Carp) with 47lb 9oz. Mark started on the feeder but after the first two hours the peg died. However, Mark notice some dark shapes swimming around and set up his pellet waggler and second cast had a mirror Carp of 13lb 6oz, which fell to a 8mm banded pellet fished over loose fed 8’s. Mark Landed another two Carp losing one more for a Carp total of 31lb 1oz.

With rain all day yesterday and the same forecast for all day and night for this the last match in this series it was decided to start earlier and cut the match down so we could weigh in with some remaining light. It was miserable drizzle all day. The series was all ready won by Kev Dicks who was sunning himself in Spain. It wasn’t his planned destination because he was booked we KISS who, as we know went bust – losing all his money. Unlucky Kev, but you had to pay in some way for all the times you drew peg 6!
My fingers were still swollen and throbbing from my accident yesterday, so fishing for Silvers wasn’t a choice. I drew peg 11. I wasn’t sure about this peg even though I have done well from it in the past. My hesitation was due to matey Martin Rayett drawing it a few times of late and has come plumb last with very low weights. The light wind was more or less directly off my back giving some wind cover to pegs 4, 5, 6 and 7 with my peg dead calm, a worry. I decided to fish the pellet waggler for some Chub and Carp to the island corner and two paste rigs – one for 4 metres and for 7 metres.
Whilst setting up panic set in, I had left my lucky red disgorger on the settee at home. Not that I am superstitious, but the question was should I go home and get it even though I had four unused replacements in the box. However, as we had only 45 minutes to set up I decided to go with a new one. I really felt uncomfortable about this.
On the whistle I started to loose feed the 4 metre line with 4 mm hard pellet and fed five or so 8’s over the island. I picked up the waggler and because of the wind could lay the line perfectly straight with the float dragging slightly toward the island. Perfect presentation, unfortunately I didn’t have a lot of room because I could only really fish the corner and the float just sat there whilst small fish nibbled the pellet. I gave up on this and had a go at 4 metres with paste and quickly lost two foul hooked Carp before I landed a 3 pounder. I had a couple more small Carp but was being pestered by Ronnie’s. Trying to catch Ronnie’s on paste is very good to improve the baiting up speed as that is all you are likely to achieve. However, Skimmers seem to hang on a little longer and that accounted for a few. Most anglers I could see were catching much more than me, so I went out at 7 metres but this time kinder potting 4’s in with the paste. I had another little run of small Skimmers before I had 4 more small carp. Then the Ronnie’s arrived. I was struggling which I put down to the dead calm. However, I usually have a really good last hour on the venue, so decide to stick to the 4 metre line for the last two hours. The struggle continued. I was then thinking that the match would be finishing an hour and a quarter earlier, so would I miss out. Panic set in and I started to up the feed and it wasn’t until the last 15 minutes that the Carp did arrive and I landed two and lost one in this short time. My net weighed 24lb 6oz for fifth in the section and two miserable points – beating Mike Jones again!! Amazingly, when the full result came in I did manage to hold on to second spot by just one point from Bob Feltham who came in third with a late run. However, if Bob had not left a 1lb Skimmer in his net he would have piped me on weight!! But if John Baker hadn’t thrown back his Skimmers on the previous match then Bob would have still been third. I would have thought both Bob and John would have the experience to know better – lessons learnt.
The question is would I have done better with my lucky disgorger?
The match was won by John Baker on peg 6 with 57lb 1oz. John caught Carp on paste at seven metres.
Martin Alexander had the fish of the series from peg 1 with a very strikingly pretty Common Carp (pictured right with Martin – Martin makes it look even prettier). The fish weighed in at 13lb 1oz.

It's interesting that all three parties identified in the artical are now dead so none can bed brought to book. But remember Willy Whitelaw was a conservative Minister and we all know what Catholic Priest get up to with children - what a bunch of cowards and hypocrites.
Back to the fishing. I had a number of options to fish today as I had a late pass out from the Special One. However, as the first South West Teams of Four is at Trinity Waters I decided to have on some practice so went with Carps AC who was fishing Woodlands. I have yet to pick up coin in the Silvers pool on this venue but have done well with Carp. I pulled peg 13 – unlucky for some! On arriving at the peg some worked had been done to the bank – to my right the bank had been remade and the other side a tree had been cut down. I had almost decided to fish for Carp throughout so I set up two paste rigs one for the LH margin and the other to be fished at full depth (nine foot) at 5 metres. I also set up a 4x16 Jolly for the 5 metre line to fish 6mm expander pellet. I started by potting in two 125 ml of micro with a dash of 4’s at 5 metres and begun to lightly loose feed the margin with 4’s. I started on the pellet and first put in had a 3lb Carp. I then had a couple of Skimmers to 1lb. I then foul hooked a Carp which broke me taking the whole rig (another £1.99 down the drain). Before putting another rig on I thought I would try the paste and had a run of Carp to 4lb with the odd Skimmer. I then noticed out the corner of my eye a swirl in the margin.
So decided it was to be an out and out Carp day so went in the margin with paste, only for the rig to snag up. I turned my back and pulled the 22 elastic very hard and the top of the floats went right through my little finger then right through the next finger!! Ouch!! I pulled the float out and was glad to see the rig was OK! I had to get off my box because I came over a little queer. I wrapped my fingers with my hanky but found it difficult in the rain and wet so went up to Rich Coles who I thought would either have a plaster or at least a tin of Guinness in his box. Rich had a similar accident recently so was able to provide two plasters. He told me he was also fishing for Carp and had nine!! Two more than me, but I was now carrying an injury.
Back to the peg and in to the margin, but this time being very careful where I put in. For the rest of the match I caught Carp Steady by switching between the two lines catching the odd accidental Bream (to 4lb). My Silvers weighed in at 12lb 7oz and my Carp went 147lb 3oz for a total of 159lb 10oz for first overall.
The Silvers was a joint affair with both Colin Golding (pictured right) and Steve Dawson (pictured lower right) weighing in 33lb 4oz of Skimmers each. I won’t go in to detail on how Colin caught as we all know his way of fishing. However, I saw something interesting at the start – Steve Dawson using a bait dropper. Interesting! Steve caught his fish on small pieces of paste hardly feeding anything relying instead on the paste fluff to feed his swim which was at about 7 metres.

With John Bennett home looking after his good Wife Betty due to her resent illness so stalwart Colin Golding stood in to run the match. Judging by recent results they are already missing you down the City ground – get well soon Betty.
After a great breakfast at Wetherspoons in Kingswood (I couldn’t eat it all – Bela did) it was off to one of my favourite venues – Rood Ashton. I can’t understand why there isn’t an open here every Sunday – food for thought me thinks as it will suit all anglers and methods. I had a chat with the owners Son Alan, during our discussions he did say that there had been some de-stocking of the Lake, I am on the fence as to whether this is a good thing or not. Time will tell.
I drew peg 7 and Bela end peg 8. Having walked round the Lake before hand most of the fish were in the early pegs and this did reflect in the results (other than Carp bagger Rod Wotton). I had already decided to have an out and out attack for the Ronnie’s as there are some good quality fish in this venue – that is if you can catch them!! I set up a paste rig for the LH margin (30 inches deep) and the same rig was suitable for fishing at 7 meters (after this the Lake starts to get shallower and it was the approximate distance I intended to fish for the Ronnie’s). I set up two Ronnie rigs – one was a 3 metre whip with waggler and the other a 4x8 Drennan Chop – wire stem (remember them – why do the stop making the popular floats – anyone?). I started on the whip with single red maggot fished over loose fed mix coloured maggots and caught Ronnie’s to 6oz straight off. I the meantime I kept a few 4 mm hard pellet going in to the RH margin keeping an eye open for any signs of fish. However, the Ronnie's became very hard to come by and this time I can’t blame the Carp for disrupting the Silvers. It was, catch a couple and then wait before another couple ended in the net. It appeared that the fish were being frightened away. I persevered with this for four hours using both rigs with neither being more productive than the other. Interestingly enough I didn’t have one Carp during this time. I had a little walk and as expected Carp was coming out from the early pegs, but hardly any Silvers were showing – so it wasn’t just me then. I went back and had a few more Ronnie’s then switched to the RH margin with paste even though there wasn’t any sign of Carp. It wasn’t producing so switched to maggot; feeding half a pint of dead maggot in a few big hand full’s. Using my Chop Ronnie rig with double Maggot I did managed to snare six decent Carp and a couple more Ronnie’s. My Carp weighed in at 22lb 4oz and the Silvers 8lb for a total of 30lb 4oz. This put me first in the Silvers (so mission accomplished) and seventh in the match.
The match was won by Mark Bird (pictured right with the bulk of his catch) from peg 5 with 71lb 6oz. Mark fished the straight lead with Conker hook bait (pellet with hard paste wrapped around it). Mark loose fed about a pint of 8 mm pellet throughout the match.
Bela DNW'd through not weighing his seven Carp one was a beautiful 8lb Common, I know this because he brought it down to my peg in his landing net! Wrong end of the match Matey.

With Huntstrete fishing so well it was no surprise to see yet another new attendee in recent retiree Ray Bazeley. Welcome matey. Paul Haines was wrong then, when he told us you were too tight to by a BAA Licence.
I drew peg 21, which to be fair has had a bit of form this year, so I was reasonably satisfied with the peg. However, I didn’t expect to catch any Ronnie’s by nonetheless set up the usual Ronnie rig. This swim is quite narrow and yet is still one of the deepest. I set up a 4x16 Jolly set to seven foot which was two foot up the inside shelf which only needed my top four. This rig was intended for the Skimmers using either corn or 6mm expander. My final rig was for paste for down the LH margin. I started by cupping in 125ml of hard 4,s at four metres. However, I started on caster with the Ronnie rig and had a 2oz Ronnie fall off first cast – which was last sighting of a Ronnie for the rest of the day! Next put in and a foul hooked Carp was bottoming out my 19 hollow elastic only, as expected come free. So it was time to go out after the Skimmers with 6 mm expander. In the meantime I kept a few 4’s going in to the margin. I did have a run of Skimmers to 8oz for the next half hour, which was when I lost another foul hooked Carp. This totally killed the peg for Silvers. I went back in the margin and another foul hooked Carp lost. I decided to give up on the Silvers all together as there appeared to be a few disruptive Carp about – that is, if I can get one in the mouth. I then hooked a 10lb Carp in the mouth and had it in the net double quick time with the 22 hollow elastic. After pulling out of another one hooked proper and another four foul hookers I did have three more near the end of the match. The four Carp weighed in at 48lb the biggest was a 17lb 8oz Common. My few Skimmers added 4lb 3oz to my total of 53lb 3oz for sixth overall. With my Carp averaging 12lb I only needed on more to move up to third!! So a tight match really.
Alan Jones drew peg 23 again and after four hours without a fish packed up and went home, probably just before the fish switched on!
The match was won by Bryan Sheppard (pictured right) from peg 16 with 99lb 6oz. Bryan fish pellet half a metre off the opposite island potting in 6 mm hard pellet. Bryan was gutted as he fell just 10oz short of a ton – unlucky matey, but a great days fishing nonetheless.
The Silvers was won by Chris Snow from peg 6 with 13lb 8oz. Chris alternated between luncheon meat and 6 mm expander pellet at 7 metres. Chris was seen jogging around Bridge pool chasing his top 6 (part of) which was being towed around the Lake by a Carp which had broken his number six section. Another insurance claim then Chris!

I kept trying the three swims to the end of the match and ended up with a total of 10 Carp for a weight of 35lb 8oz - with unusually dry Silvers net – unbelievable. This gave me 6 points, with 38lb 5oz taking nine points - so close. This helped the Charlie’s angels to 6th overall with 21 points.
The Silvers was won by Gary Etheridge (pictured above right) from peg 61 on Wild Marsh (WM) with 19lb 15oz. Gary caught all sorts on maggot - deep and shallow.
