Bloody hell, 53 years ago, seems like yesterday. This match was memorable, not for the bad fishing, but the row afterwards. Jack Pebworth was a notorious walker (bit like a certain Mr Nicholls) He drew in the trees at Saltford, but it wasn't long before he was on his travels, probably ending up at Newbridge. He did manage to make it back to his peg towards the end of the match having left his bait in the water for the duration. He reeled in and lo and behold a roach had hung its self. I think everyone in the vicinity heard him shout out, then the mumbling started, by the the time everyone got back to shepherds boat house. a full scale row was going on.As at the time there was nothing in the rules to prevent him weighing the fish he won the match and the pools that was a tidy sum. needless to say at the next winter league AGM a rule was brought in that anyone leaving their peg as to remove their bait from the water!
